Privacy Policy

This page covers two things: (1) what the fieldtoolkit.com website logs about visitors, and (2) what the CCTV IP Toolkit Windows app sends or stores. They are different. Read both.

The Windows app: CCTVIPToolkit.exe

The desktop application does not collect, transmit, or upload any data about you, your network, your cameras, or your usage. Specifically:

• No telemetry. The app makes no outbound connection to fieldtoolkit.com, GitHub, or any other server during normal operation.
• No analytics. No tracking pixels, no analytics SDK, no error reporting service.
• No phone-home. Update checks are the only outbound network call — the app fetches the public GitHub releases API to compare your installed version against the latest tag. The request includes only the standard User-Agent string. No personal identifiers, no install ID.
• No credentials leave your machine except to the cameras you are programming. Camera passwords are stored in %APPDATA%\CCTVIPToolkit\passwords.json on your computer only.
• Camera previews are local. Live snapshots fetched during programming are displayed in the GUI and discarded; they are never uploaded.
• The app is open source. The full source is published at github.com/theLostPing/cctv-ip-toolkit. Verify the above by reading the code or by capturing the app's network traffic with Wireshark.

The website: fieldtoolkit.com

The website logs the following when you visit and especially when you click Download:

• IP address — from the request, used for geographic statistics and to deter scrapers.
• User-Agent string — browser / OS string sent by your browser.
• Referer — the page that linked you here, if any.
• Asset name and version — which file you downloaded (e.g. CCTVIPToolkit.exe) and the requested version tag.
• Timestamp.
• Geographic location — city, region, country, and ISP/organization, derived by sending your IP address to the third-party service ipapi.co. Their privacy practices apply to that lookup.

This data is written to a server-side JSON log file. It is used to:

• Count downloads and observe geographic spread (rough “is anyone in $REGION using this” signal).
• Detect scraping or unusual activity.

The data is not sold, shared with advertisers, or used for ad targeting. The site has no ad network integrations and no third-party analytics (no Google Analytics, no Facebook Pixel, no Meta tracking, no Cloudflare Analytics beyond standard request logs).

Cookies: the site uses one functional cookie to remember your light/dark theme preference. It is set client-side, never transmitted to any third party, and contains only the value light or dark. No tracking cookies of any kind.

Optional “Notify me” mailing list

If you submit your email address using the “Get notified of new versions” form on the homepage, your email is stored on the server for the sole purpose of mailing you when a new release ships. You can unsubscribe by replying to any notification email or by emailing [email protected]. The list is never shared.

Code signing & SignPath

Release builds are signed via the SignPath Foundation code-signing program for open-source projects. Signing happens in GitHub Actions and does not transmit any data about end users.

Data retention

Server-side download logs are retained until manually rotated, typically every few months. Older log files are deleted. There is no archival to cold storage or off-site backup specifically for these logs.

Data removal requests

To request removal of any record about you (download log entry, mailing-list entry, etc.), email [email protected] with enough information to identify the record (an approximate date and your IP, or your subscribed email address). Requests are processed manually within a reasonable time.

Children

The site and tool are not directed at children under 13. No data is knowingly collected from anyone in that age bracket.

Changes to this policy

If this policy is updated, the date at the top of this page changes. Significant changes will also be noted in the website changelog.
